Wow, only a year after it’s FAILED release, Microsoft decides to finally launch an update! I can’t believe how shit-tastic Microsoft has made Vista. Only if you know what you are doing behind a PC and how Vista’s new core works, is it manageable. The average user gets such a headache, they revert to XP. Anyways…
Microsoft kept SP1 closed to private testers only, until they decided ‘Wait a sec, I think people are mad’. Now you can download the near complete upgrade. Now keep in mind, this is not the fully released, ‘z0mg our software sucks’ fix. But it’s a start to keep that machine more stable.
The final, full release of SP1 is scheduled for February, making it over a year since an update has been given to the public. The release reportedly consists mainly of bug fixes and performance and compatibility improvements — no huge app upgrades or functionality enhancements, though there are some unspecified minor new features.
I wouldn’t recommend grabbing this update until it is finished in February, or whenever they release it. But, if you have a spare machine and can’t wait, go nuts.
Bear in mind that SP1 RC Refresh, as the update is known, requires previous versions of SP1 to be uninstalled first, and there are several updates you’ll need to apply to your existing Vista install which can’t be removed later should you want to downgrade to a stable version of Vista.
After all that has been said, XP Pro ftw.

I think Bill chose the right time to ‘retire’ from Microsoft (even though he still holds the role of Chairman) before he takes even more heat for releasing shitty ass products.
However he is a smart guy and I think people still go to all his keynotes because of how much knowledge he has in his field.

Come on, how much of a role do you think Bill Gates has really had on the company the past 2-3 years? I don’t think much.
I can only hope that massive change is underway at Microsoft but so far, it looks like they are continuing to spiral out of control.
